Journal Club

Journal Club is founded and led by student leaders and aspiring researchers. It focuses on the needs of students and culminates in the creation of a research poster. Clubs meet every month, but applications must be submitted at the start of every cohort (4 months).

Do you have prior research experience? Do you want to help mentor a group of students? Are you in high school or college? Apply as a mentor today!

Deciphering Academic Journal Jargon

  • How do citations work? What are the different parts of a paper? How do I tell which journals are the most trustworthy and stray away from predatory ones? These are all questions high schoolers learn to answer, with their tutors being none other than their peers themselves.

Neuroscience Focus

  • This club is specifically for those interested in reading and deciphering neuroscience and psychology-specific journals. Not only do students learn how to read and cite journals, but they also learn the function of different parts of the brain by reading consensus papers.

Program Structure

  • Learn about predatory journals; how to read a research paper (Month 1)

  • Choose a research topic and question; explore literature about it (Month 2)

  • Discuss implications; begin writing and creation of poster (Month 3)

  • Presentation! (Month 4)

Journal Club Deliverables

Here are what our Winter Cohort (Oct - Jan) students have been working on! This first iteration of Journal Club (this initiative was designed over the summer of 2025 and executed October 2025) has been small, with one mentor, one lead and 4 students, but we are looking to expand further!
